I don’t step foot in a grocery store without a list or I come home with odds and ends that don’t fill the need of my menu, also some things that don’t need to be in the pantry like Oreo cookies. When I started following Fly Lady I started making a menu, a grocery list and couldn’t believe how much money (and time) I saved doing that.
My grocery list is made for today – we are having guests for the weekend and I called ahead to see if there was anything special for breakfast etc. they would like.
Another quick side note – if you are planning a menu for guests other than family that you know, it is nice to call ahead and ask of food allergies or other dietary restrictions. If your guest is lactose intolerant and you’re planning lasagna or an allergy to nuts and you were going to do cashew chicken – not good. I ran into that a few years ago.

  • We buy the same things from 3 different stores every week, so I hardly ever have a list… unless we’re out of something we don’t buy weekly (like oil). I have to make a list if I’m sick and sending hubby… but he only goes to one store to save on time.
We have family coming in before Christmas, and baking will be one way I entertain them, so Thanks for this post. I need to look up those special recipes and make a list of things to buy this week. Great job thinking ahead (and inspiring us to do the same)!

  • I am learning so much from this 100 Days – things that I can use all year long! Thanks so much.

  • Ugh. I’m having a really hard time with this this year. It’s hard to get my husband to work with a menu. There’s too much “But I don’t want to eat that.” or “But I don’t feel like cooking.” So… I have whiny-man to contend with also. : /
